Approaching the boat from a dock, we got our second big clue that this was an extremely well-thought-out vessel when we saw the single-level cockpit. Removing the expected step-up expands significantly on the useable space offered by the generous 12-foot beam, but more importantly presents a welcoming social environment that beckons guests aboard for a day of cruising, relaxing on the forward sunpad, or enjoying the water via the optional hydraulic swim platform.
In the cockpit, a solid-surface countertop houses a handy stove and stainless steel sink with a nearby outlet for a blender. Completing the package are the optional refrigerator and icemaker, which fit seamlessly underneath. Seating is equally convivial, starting with the J-shaped settee that allows guests to interact with each other and the driver. Above, the hardtop offers a fine balance of shade and sun, while beneath the feet is snap-in, sea-grass carpeting, easily removed for those times when you want bare decks. Some other things to consider are the optional air conditioning/heating for year-round comfort, barbeque grill and dinette table. The A40 is all about building the boat you want.
As the lights go down, the A40 becomes an excellent venue for a sophisticated cocktail hour martini cruise. Flick on the optional dual underwater LED lights to add ambience and attract attention, whether sipping libations under way or at the dock.
When it comes to handling the boat, even the pickiest driver will be pleased with the plush dual helm seat with flip-up bolster facing the cutting-edge Garmin 8212 Glass Cockpit with twin 12-inch integrated multi-function touchscreens for virtually intuitive control of navigation systems, even the optional Garmin 24-inch HD Dome Radar.
There are a half dozen power choices, two from MerCruiser and four from Volvo. With twin Volvo Diesel D6 400s installed, the A40 consumed an economical 28 gph at 3000 rpm while offering a healthy 37 mph, the manufacturer reports. A mere 500 rpm more takes the boat up to 46.5 mph while consuming 40 gph. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the A40 sips a mere 7.2 gph at 1500 rpm while cruising at a sedate 10.1 mph.
Stepping into the cabin is stepping into an oasis of air conditioned/heated comfort and style, and the ability to customize further. Think flawless Austrian free-range leather, granite counters and Wenge wood flooring. Panoramic windows, skylights and an opening hatch make the area light and airy.
The galley features a convenient sink, microware and refrigerator for quick meals or heating cocktail hour hors d’oeuvres. The midship cabin boasts twin loveseats, which are perfect for watching the flatscreen television during the day. Insert the filler cushion and you’ve got additional sleep space. Likewise, the dinette forward transforms into a large v-berth. The head has a Vacuflush toilet with separate shower. A central vacuum system is available to keep things ship-shape below.
There’s so much more to say, but to sum up the A40: It was created to be the ultimate dayboat with the versatility to overnight, and it exceeds that goal. www.cobaltboats.com
